Biggest glacial lake in Montenegro
Half day excursion
Offered in English, Russian and French
Beneath the giant and rough massif of Prokletije, the mountain whose name speaks about the reputation that this massif has among the people who live in its shadow, in almost idyllic valley lies lake Plav. Long- vanished glaciers, left at the foot of the Prokletije, at an altitude of 907 meters, enough space for the lake and the small town on its banks. Generatons grew up along with the lake and on the lake, enjoying all the benefits of this mountain jewel and the largest glacial lake in Montenegro, over 2 km long and 1 km wide. The lake is supplied by the river Ljuce, which drops cold and clear water from the snows of Prokletije to the valley of Plav. Water from the well known Alipašini springs, through this river, finds its way to lake Plav. This is the largest continuous karst spring in Montenegro.
This is not the end of the road for water from Prokletije because the lake gives life to a strong and rapid river Lim, through which water from the lake continues its journey toward the Drina and far seas. Clear and deep lake water, whose maximum depth reaches up to 9 meters, hide plenty of life and represents a paradise for fishermen. In winter, the lake is icebound, and locals say that in extremely cold winters thick layer of ice covers lake completely so that you can drive car over the ice. Tourists can hike the trails around the lake and the surrounding mountain areas, swim in the clear waters of the lake, or simply enjoy the fresh air and the view unique in its beauty. It is possible to visit Savino oko and valleys Grebaja. The tour starts from Kolasin.
